HotSpot Optimizations (JIT)

July 8, 2013

Although I’ve worked professionally with the Java language for over 10yrs, it’s really the JVM that has always had my respect and interest.

A great talk titled “Towards a Universal VM” by Brian Goetz and Alex Buckley from Oracle in 2009 really exemplifies why I appreciate the JVM.

OpenJDK’s HotSpot VM Internals Wiki page can be found here, and it has a wealth of detailed information and links about the JVM.

The Java HotSpot Performance Engine Architecture white paper provides a high level overview of the various components of the JVM.

There are also detailed explanation of what the JIT JVM compiler optimizes: Performance Techniques and Performance Tactic Index.
